Option 1:
Keep Your Subaru Vehicle & Pay the Difference

If you decide to keep your currently leased Subaru, then we have great news for you! You will be able to purchase your current Subaru vehicle at the end of its lease. Click the button below to learn more about your lease purchase option.

Option 2:
Return Your Lease &  Purchase or Lease a New Subaru

If you decide that you want something new and want to start fresh with a new Subaru lease or vehicle purchase, then this is a good option if your current vehicle doesn't have any leased car equity and is in good shape with little to no excess miles. Click the button below to learn more about the process for returning your Subaru lease.

Leased Car Equity is when your leased vehicle has a market value greater than then Residual Value that was given in your lease terms. If your current vehicle's value is less than it's residual value, you should consider returning your lease over trading it in.

Option 3:
Trade In Your Lease & Lease or Purchase a New Subaru

Similar to the second option, you decide that you want something new and don't want to keep your current lease; so, when should you consider trading in your leased Subaru instead of just returning it?

  • If your leased vehicle has leased car equity; i.e., it has a market value higher than residual value.
  • If its turn-in situation is not ideal; i.e., it has excess damage and/or mileage that could incur high return fees.
How far out are you from your lease end date?

The first think you need to think about is if you want to keep your current Subaru or get something new. Many people build a bond with their car and decided that they don't want to give it up at the end of their lease, while others want something new to keep up with the current technology and features, or just need something bigger to carry their growing family. This can be a hard decision, that's why it's time to start thinking about your options now so you will be ready when your lease end date rolls around.

Subaru Lease-End Vehicle Inspection

As you near the end of your lease term, Subaru Motors Finance will invite you to participate in a complimentary vehicle inspection provided by an independent inspection company. You will revive several communications from Subaru with information on how to schedule this inspection and what to expect. Make sure your contact information and mailing address is correct with Subaru Motors Finance so you don't miss any of these communications. Address changes can be made online at SubaruMotorsFinance.com or by calling Customer Service at 1-866-401-9743.

Is the Inspection Needed?

The vehicle inspection is optional and not required by Subaru, but we highly recommend having this complementary inspection done prior to your lease return. This inspection lets you know, in advance, what excess wear and use charges you can expect to owe upon returning the vehicle. In addition, it gives you the opportunity to repair any damage before turn-in to avoid those charges. If this optional inspection is not performed before turn-in, your vehicle will be inspected by an independent inspection company at or after turn-in to determine if there are any excess wear and use charges.

How the Inspection Works

The inspection is free of charge and provides a rough evaluation of wear and use to assess potential lease-end charges. When the inspection is complete you will receive a condition report from the inspector. This report details wear and use items that you may be billed for upon returning your lease, please note that this report is not a bill and will not show amounts.

Excess Wear and Use Statement

2 - 3 weeks after your inspection you should receive an Excess Wear and Use Statement. This statement will provide you with repair estimates for items found in the inspection. This statement is not a bill, but it will provide amounts that will be factored into your final end-of-lease bill if not repaired. Your Wear and Use Statement does not include the $1,000 wear and use waiver that is part of your Subaru lease (see lease contract for exclusions). Your $1,000 wear and use waiver will be factored in, if applicable, to your final bill. However, with this information you can decide if it's in your best interest to repair any of the items before returning the vehicle or to return the vehicle as-is.

If you choose to make repairs to your vehicle, contact Subaru Motors Finance before returning the vehicle. Subaru Motors Finance will verify the repairs and apply any appropriate credits to your final end-of-lease bill. You can schedule any necessary repairs with our friendly, Subaru Certified Service Department.

Tips for a Smooth End-of-Lease Process

Your Final Payment

Since the last payment on your leased Subaru is due one month before the actual lease end date, it's important that you remember to cancel any recurring payments you may have set up to avoid overpaying your lease account.

If you have chosen to return your Subaru and purchase or lease a new vehicle, there will be a payoff request submitted by the retailer to receive a complete payoff including all account credits. This option will not generate a refund of an over payment as all credits will be to include in the new contract agreement OR an end of term bill for mileage, wear and use or disposition fees.
If you have chosen to return your vehicle, any over payment should not be included in a payoff quoted to the retailer AND you will receive an end of term bill for mileage, wear and use of disposition fees. If you have a credit on your account at the time of turn in, please tell the retailer you expect these funds to be returned. Make sure you contact us with your return/turn in information.

Early Termination

An early termination occurs if you return your lease 31 or more days before your scheduled maturity end date. If you choose to return your vehicle early, you may incur early termination charges.

Note: if you end your lease as part of a trade-in, the dealership will buy out your lease and this is not considered an early termination.

End-of-Term Billing

Based on the terms of your lease contract, your lease-end bill may include charges for outstanding payments, taxes, excess mileage and excess wear and use. There may also be a $300 disposition fee. Please review your contract carefully so you'll know what charges you may be billed for at the end of your lease. We will not charge you any fees when you turn in your vehicle.

Extending Your Lease

Once you're in the final 30 days of your lease, you may request to extend your lease a maximum of five months. Federal regulations prevent a lease account from going beyond the defined extension period. If you exceed the lease extension limit, your vehicle may be repossessed, you may incur additional end-of-lease fees and your credit may be negatively impacted. Our acceptance of lease payments after the lease maturity scheduled end date does not give you the right to keep the vehicle and it does not mean that we agree to extend the lease term. If you have an approved extension on your lease you still have the same lease end options, as detailed above, at the end of your extension period.

Please contact Subaru Motors Finance at 1-800-644-1941 Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 6 PM ET to request and receive approval for an extension.

Odometer Statement

When you return your leased vehicle, you will be required to complete and sign an odometer statement.
