Helping Kids Return to School after Cancer  –  Lydia R

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society hosted an event to raise money for children who are battling cancer, in an effort to help ease the financial burdens that transitioning back to the school system brings. Don Mealey Sport Subaru led the charge as a title sponsor for the this event. The kids and families impacted by their generosity were so pleased to see the support from their community and local businesses. Most children are able to return to school full-time after they complete cancer treatment. Going back to school is a priority because it can give children a sense of normalcy and is an important part of their social and academic development. Some children feel excited about returning to school, while others feel upset or anxious. These are all normal reactions. The transition back to school can be just as hard for parents. Parents might think school is going to be overwhelming for their child. They might worry their child will get infections, become overly tired, or be teased for being different. All of these concerns are normal as well, but together as a community, we can reshape the negative stigmas and help bring love and light to the darkness of cancer.

Empowering Seniors to Remain Healthy & Independent  –  Katherine B

Our thanks to Don Mealey Sport Subaru for joining us bright and early at the 30th Annual Turkey Trot 5k to collect holiday gift drive donations. Join us bright and early Thanksgiving morning with 1,000s of other people in our community for the next Annual Seniors First Turkey Trot 5k fun run. Each participant will receive a commemorative shirt and finisher's medal. Bring your friends and family and join us in a race to end senior hunger! Our mission is to enhance the quality of life of seniors by maintaining their independence and dignity. Seniors First offers the choice, hope and quality care needed for senior independent living. Founded in 1966, Seniors First, Inc. has grown from a small information and referral agency to become the largest social services organization in Greater Orlando providing direct service to our community’s vulnerable elderly. Programs that help older Americans live independently in their own homes have not kept pace with the needs. Without home care and community based assistance, seniors are left with one choice – giving up their home and independence. When seniors remain at home, out of hospitals and nursing facilities, they have a better quality of life and it saves Medicare and Medicaid costs to the tax payer. It’s a win-win for our seniors and our community. We empowering seniors to remain healthy and independent. Our supportive services help seniors meet their daily living needs at home, which greatly impacts their health and ability to remain living independently. With community-based assistance, seniors can thrive at home where they are happiest. We are the safety net.Seniors First offers a vital support system for vulnerable elderly with limited options who would otherwise not have access to or be able to afford services. Any Orange or Seminole County resident age 60 years and older may be eligible for our services. Eligibility requirements vary by program, and some programs require a professional in-home assessment. The need is growing. The number of Americans over the age of 65 is expected to more than double over the next three decades. Seniors First knows this is not just a problem in other cities, this issue is on our doorstep as well. Seniors First has been able to maintain a consistent program of services for over 50 years. But the needs in our community far outweigh available resources. Federal and state funding alone does not get the job done. Seniors First leverages private contributions to provide services to more seniors, which enables us to reduce our waiting list. Because of this overwhelming demand, we maintain a constant wait list for most of our programs. Still, we continue to partner with our community to meet the needs of our senior neighbors.
