Don Mealey Sport Subaru Donates 40 Acres of Transformed Wetlands to Conservation Florida - Sarah C

Conservation Florida, a leader in statewide land conservation, has permanently protected a critical piece of one of the last remaining unpaved forested wetlands in the heart of Orlando, thanks to a generous donation by Don Mealey Sport Subaru. After completing a four-year, multi-million-dollar remediation of the wetland property, Don Mealey Sport Subaru donated the 39.6-acre site, as well as pledged $100,000, to Conservation Florida to ensure the property's vital – yet fragile – ecosystem is protected in perpetuity. Conservation Florida is a statewide accredited land conservancy working to conserve Florida’s water, wildlife, wild places, and protect the Florida Wildlife Corridor. The organization’s conservation projects support Florida’s native plants and wildlife, fresh water, wildlife corridors, family farms and ranches, the economy, and nature-based recreation. Since its founding in 1999, Conservation Florida has prioritized strategic and evidence-based land protection and has saved over 30,000 acres of critical habitat. The massive environmental restoration is part of a larger development project associated with Sport Subaru relocating its store to the Packing District near Princeton Avenue and John Young Parkway. After seeing the transformative nature of redevelopment in that area, the Mealeys bought 75 acres, which included this heavily blighted area that had been an unofficial public dump for five decades. The revitalized land now serves as a home to 20-30 species of reptiles and amphibians, fox squirrels, red-shouldered hawks, a variety of vegetation and more. “We always want to be smart and purposeful in how we conduct our business,” said Robert Mealey, co-owner of Sport Subaru. “Subaru and our customers share a strong environmental focus and we saw the need to repair an ecosystem damaged by a half century of staggering neglect and how compromised the property was as a result. We explored how we could improve it and we followed that path.” Conducted with supervision from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Environmental Regulation, the massive restoration included moving 40,000 tons of trash, concrete, dirt, and debris to clear the site. Mr. Mealey continued, “We knew that we needed to do this right; the wetlands weren’t going to get another second chance.” "Conservation Florida is proud to have conserved a slice of wild Florida within The City Beautiful. Conservation of the property is a huge win for Orlando and located in the heart of our bustling and growing community. We are grateful for Don Mealey Sport Subaru’s donation, and continued support of our mission. We look forward to working with Subaru and the Orlando community to ensure the property is cherished forever" said Traci Deen, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Conservation Florida. Don Mealey Sport Subaru opened its new location and, holding true to their commitment to protecting the environment, the new site is powered by 1200 solar panels. Notably, thanks to its glass design, customers can easily enjoy the view of the wetlands during their visit to the car store. “We are so grateful for our customers and our employees, and we want them to know that this is our hometown and, like anyone else, we want to do what we can to contribute to our quality of life,” praised Mr. Mealey. Conservation Florida is committed to protecting land that safeguards Florida's lifeblood: water. Learn more about Conservation Florida’s mission to protect wild Florida at conservationfla.org.

Finding Furever Homes for Rescue Dogs and Cats - Kathy A

Pet Rescue by Judy has always been very proud and grateful for the continuing support of Don Mealey Sport Subaru. Once again, this year, they partnered with us to help us secure a grant from the ASPCA benefiting so many of our deserving dogs and cats. On October 8th, Sport Subaru hosted another family friendly adoption event to help our rescue pets find wonderful, loving homes. As always, the staff was very welcoming and accommodating and the event was a huge success! Many people who were weary from the recent impact of hurricane Ian on Central Florida came out to relax, have fun and play with our rescue dogs and puppies. Many of our dogs, puppies, kittens and cats found their furever homes as a result of this event and the generosity of Sport Subaru.

Thank you so much to Don Mealey Sport Subaru for donating a Subaru Crosstrek in support of WMFE's Spring Fund Drive. Staples & Subaru Partnership - Joseph B

We had the opportunity for a second consecutive year to work with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We were provided a list of 20 kids to help out at Nemours and Orlando Regional with their Back to School needs this year. We feel so privileged to be able to help kids get all the supplies they need as well as be able to raffle computers and tablets to a few lucky students. This was our second year also partnering with Don Mealey Sport Subaru of Orlando. We were excited that they were able to help in a major way with us by providing one student a study station makeover which included a desk, printer, computer, and desk organization supplies. The kids and parents were all so appreciative of our efforts to ease this back to school season. We've thoroughly enjoyed working with LLS and Subaru and look forward to future event partnerships.

Helping Kids Return to School after Cancer - Lydia R

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society hosted an event to raise money for children who are battling cancer, in an effort to help ease the financial burdens that transitioning back to the school system brings. Don Mealey Sport Subaru led the charge as a title sponsor for the this event. The kids and families impacted by their generosity were so pleased to see the support from their community and local businesses. Most children are able to return to school full-time after they complete cancer treatment. Going back to school is a priority because it can give children a sense of normalcy and is an important part of their social and academic development. Some children feel excited about returning to school, while others feel upset or anxious. These are all normal reactions. The transition back to school can be just as hard for parents. Parents might think school is going to be overwhelming for their child. They might worry their child will get infections, become overly tired, or be teased for being different. All of these concerns are normal as well, but together as a community, we can reshape the negative stigmas and help bring love and light to the darkness of cancer.
